Picturesque Boppard is set on a horse-shoe shaped section of the River Rhine about 12 miles (20km) south of Koblenz in Germany. Once the Roman fort of Baudobriga, it boats Roman remains and on the site of the old Roman baths, the twin towered Romanesque St Severus Kirche dating from the 13th century. Sights also include the Gothic Carmelite Church (14th century) and in the 14th archbishop's palace you will find the Museum der Stadt Boppard with a fine collection of the furniture of Michael Thonet.
In the Archaelogical Park there are remains of the old Roman camp wall, graves from the 7th century Frankish era and a section of a medieval store or dance hall. There is also a chairlift that will take you to the Vierseenblick with fine views of the river below and a scenic train ride to Buckholst (the Hunstruckbahn) crossing two viaducts and passing through five tunnels.
During the Middle Ages Boppard was a major commercial centre of commerce, port and a free imperial city. From 1312, it was ruled by the archbishop-elector of Trier and remained under the electors for centuries. Rule was passed to Prussia by the Congress of Vienna in 1815.
